Halloween Hair Carnival! Beautiful Butterfly With A Fancy Half Updo

Happy Halloween Everyone! I hope you all had a fun and safe night. Keyanna had a blast! (for the most part). 

This year, after eyeing a pair of wings at the craft store, Keyanna had her heart set on being  a butterfly. So we did another homemade costume this year. I think she looked super cute and it hardly cost us anything!. We got the wings on sale for $5.99, the tutu we reused from last years rockstar costume (we just took the pink out),  I spent about  $2.00 on a little more orange/black tulle to fill it up again and to make the headband. The make-up is LA Colors from the Dollar Tree, and the rest of the costume (boots, leggings, and a black gymnastics leotard) she already had! So.. Total cost? Only about 9.00! 

The hair was not exactly what we had originally planned, but Key absolutely LOVED it! We went with a half Updo, and since I wanted a lot of volume behind her headband I had the genius idea of using a Bumpit. Lol. 

I wanted her roots to be really straight for this style so I started by flat ironing her hair using…………… (I know a lot of you choose not to use heat on your child’s hair, I personally don’t have a problem using it on rare occasions and it hasn’t caused any problems for us.) I then added the Bumpit on the crown of her head, took the top half of the loose hair, gave it a little twist, and secured that part in the back of her head using a few more pins. 

For the bottom half of the hair I added a few medium size Curlformers and set them using Deva Curl AnGel (review coming soon) I left those in for a few hours and she was good to go!

Halloween Style: Cornrowed Spider/Web Design

So a lot of you have probably seen these pics on Beads Braids & Beyond  already, I was so honored when she asked to share our style as photo of the day! 

I did this style on Keyanna at the beginning of October, I though it was fitting since it had a Halloween feel to it, This was my first time doing spider/web braids and I think it was the most intricate style I have ever done. We got tons of compliments and Keyanna insists it’s her new favorite style. 

I’m hoping anyone who plans on trying to copy this style can do it by just looking at our pics and kind of following what we did through them because honestly this style is just too complicated for me to explain and I would probably just confuse you all more if I tried lol. I wil say that I started the style by parting her hair down the middle (from her forehead to the nape of her neck) and braided the left side first, and then did the right side making it as symmetrical as I could.. It is a little off though. I started with the top legs and did the rest of the spider, and then went on to do the web.  For the spiders bodyI actually tied her hair in a knot. I wanted to give it a 3D effect. 

In the first pics I just put the loose hair in 2 side braid pigtails and threw in some ballies, We switched it up a few days later and added some beads. 

Chocolate Hair/Vanilla Care also did a take on our style doing flat rope twists instead of cornrows and it came out gorgeous. She goes into a little more detail on how she did the style so definitely check that out if your having difficulty recreating our style or if you prefer flat rope twists over cornrows.

A few days later we took out the 2 large braids and did some singles with beads instead. She wore her hair this way until we were ready to take it down.

I know a lot of you are probably wondering what that blue and black thing is in her hair so let me just tell you it's a hair wrap. We had put it in a week or so before doing this style so I just worked around it. Anyways, that's a post for another time.

Hair Carnival! Past Halloween Costumes and Styles

This is our first Hair Carnival that Keyanna and I have participated in and we are so excited! The topic is past Halloween Costumes and styles, unfortunately most of these pics were taken before we started blogging (or even doing hair for that matter) so they are not super fancy or anything like that. But I love looking back through old pics of my baby when she was a baby so this was definitely a fun post to do! Hope you all enjoy it! 

Keyanna’s first Halloween she was 5 months old and went as a bunny, I waited until the absolute LAST second to get her a costume (we literally bought it Halloween morning lol) so needless to say everything was already picked over. This was the last costume they had in her size, I didn’t really care for it but at least it was warm.. Halloween in Portland in usually cold. Obviously we didn’t do anything special with her hair because.. Well, she didn’t have any! These pics are from my old film camera and I was not trying to bust out my scanner so I just took a pic of a page out of her baby book. 

By the way, she hated the hood and wouldn’t wear it lol. 

For her second Halloween she was almost a year and a half and went as a Carebear! We shopped a little earlier that year and when she saw the costume at Walmart she had to have it. And she was so cute in it! Didn’t do anything special with her hair this time either as it was going to be covered by the hood, or so I thought! She still didn,t like wearing hoods so this was the best pic I got. 

For her third Halloween she was about 2 and a half years and went as Tigger (the cutest Tigger I have ever seen if I do say so myself lol). I just tied her hair back into a pony, since yet again it was another hooded costume, but guess what?.. She actually kept the hood on that year! 

Keyanna wore the same costume for her fourth and fifth Halloween, I couldn’t find the pics from the fourth.. They are on a CD around here somewhere but here are a few from the fifth. She went as a witch. 

And finally.. 

Last year Keyanna was 5 years old and went as a ROCKSTAR! Her favorite costume so far. She even sang Hannah Montana/Camp Rock songs at peoples doors while she was trick or treating lol. And for once we had a warm Halloween. I made her tutu for the costume and just put an iron on transfer on the top to make it sparkle. This costume was easy to make and hardly cost us anything. For her hair I did a braided Mohawk, the product I used ended up being way too heavy for her hair and just weighed the top part down, but I didn’t have any time to fix it before we went out that night.

Halloween Hair...Snow White

Start with the ringlets like in the base hair post below and finger comb them out and spray them. Let them dry. I put the headband...Snow White's is red. Make sure you remember that. On a normal day I would probably stop here because I love this. However, we are trying to be Snow White, so we keep on going.

So now, take and brush her hair down. I use my fingers and comb them back into BIG ringlets, or waves.

I know it seems kind of redundant to make ringlets and comb them out and re-put them into ringlets, but it is really the only way I know of to make this kind of a wave.

If your daughter doesn't have bangs, I would just pull the hair back into the headband and pull a bit forward...think DJ Tanner from Full House.

Halloween Hair...Jasmine

Disclaimer: Animated girls have unreal, freakishly thick hair. I would love to have animated, plastic hair that never messes up.


Start with dry hair. Part with the natural part. I also curled the ends.


Part the hair from the part to the ear. Temporarily put it in an elastic, just to keep it out of the way.




Now, back comb the hair, the boofier the better.



Now, I just took a clip and twisted it up...just for a minute. Take a length of ribbon and put it on the hair that is down just before the boof. Tie it at the base of the hair.

Now let her hair down. Those front pieces that you left down, spray them with hairspray and twist them back. I then bobby pinned the hair to the ribbon.

Then take and pull the hair into an elastic. Here is where you boof the hair up. I just pull up the hair from the ponytail. Take another length of ribbon and tie it around the ponytail. I took about a foot and wrap it on one side and tie, then the other. Until you have only enough left to tie a knot. You will see it better in the last picture.

Now, put in one more elastic and boof out the hair again.

Repeat with the ribbon. If I were doing this for Halloween, I would tuck the ends of the ribbons in.

Halloween Hair...The base for MANY styles

Many of the characters that I see out there have a basic hairstyle. It starts with ringlets.



Start out with dirty hair. Dirty hair holds curl better. At least in my house it does. So when your darling daughter gets her bath the night before, lay off the hair washing. I used a bunch of curl cream and ran it through her hair.







Then I curled ringlets with my flat-iron. You could use a curling iron, but I am more proficent with my flat iron. I curled her entire head of hair in less than five minutes. You can't do that with a curling iron, especially on thicker hair.



To curl her hair with the flat iron, I start at the base of the hair and wrap the hair around the flat iron and slowly pull it down. While I am pulling down, I keep the iron turned.



Less than five minutes later...

Excuse her tired eyes. She had some tummy troubles last night and she parked her pillow and blankets in the bathroom and slept on the bathroom floor. I don't think you sleep very well on the bathroom floor.

Also, this is where you stop if you are Goldilocks, Little Bo-Peep, Little Miss Muffet, Nellie Olsen (giggle), etc. Just spray and add your hat or your oversized bow that is almost as big as your head.

However, today we are not any of those characters. So I grab a section of hair at the crown of her head and back comb.

A lot. The poofier you want her hair, the more you back comb.

Now, let the hair fall and smooth over the top of where you just back combed. You may think you have lost some of the curl, but let me assure you, you have not. Those ends look a little wonky.

Simply take your fingers and smooth them back into curls.

Like so.

This wasn't my last step. I also sprayed her hair with hairspray and scrunched the ends up.

Look at those ends, and that poof. I will have you know, this is how my hair looked my entire junior year, only I used hot rollers. Then I cut my hair and my boyfriend hated me. So I dumped his sorry behind. I had cool hair in highschool. People even wrote that in my yearbook. True story.

Here is your base. Now you can take and do what you want with it. For school we put a snap barrette in it and then a flower over that.

For a fairy, I would twist it up into a claw and then let it fly all over the place or pull it into two loose ponytails at the crown and then back comb it some more or even re-curl pieces to give it more definition, like below.



However, what we were going for as far as princesses and characters was Ariel and Sleeping Beauty. I will show you THAT tomorrow. I am cranking these out as fast as I can before Halloween and I will be taking a four-day blogging break starting Friday. I really hope these little tutorials are helping so that moms don't have to go out and buy a bunch of nasty wigs that will never EVER be as cute as their daughters real hair!
